Brampton Moor (in the mid-1600s it was known as Brampton Moore) was a bleak are in Westmoreland some 4 miles from Howgill, a chapelry in the Sedburgh parish. In the early years of the 19th century Howgill was in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in the diocese of Ripon. Whilst racing did take place on Brampton Moor in the 17th century, very little is known of the meetings. However, the owner of Howgill Castle was Sir Richard Sandford who succeeded his father and became the second Baronet in 1660.
In 1666 he oversaw the races on Brampton Moore (sic) and donated the main prize, a silver bowl shown opposite, which bore the inscription:-

the 25th March, 1666

The results from those races have not survived the passing of time and, tragically, Sir Richard was murdered in 1675.
